How to Save a Life

Here is the story of my journey to Florida almost two months after my beloved Nana's death. The purpose of the trip was to spend some time with Poppop and help him sort through Nana's stuff. The findings, memories, atmosphere... it's all so intense. It feels like she should still be right here. But she's not.

And so, we are still honoring her and loving her legacy, the gifts she left us, the love she spent years pouring out to us. Nana sure knew how to save a life.

Tonight…

Came home and spent a few hours cleaning up Nana’s studio. Went through 5 or 6 shelves of books… Novels, art books, herbal remedies, sewing, devotionals, fibromyalgia, souvenir pamphlets, home tips… You name it, Nana read it. She always filled each book with letters, photos, and scrap paper to serve as bookmarks, and many inside covers were inscribed with her name or a sweet note from a friend. We sorted piles for charity donation, neighborhood library donation, Poppop’s library, and Mom and I to take home for ourselves or other family members. Such a huge task and barely through half the books, not to mention all of the rest of the wide array of various things crammed into her special room.
