How to Save a Life

Here is the story of my journey to Florida almost two months after my beloved Nana's death. The purpose of the trip was to spend some time with Poppop and help him sort through Nana's stuff. The findings, memories, atmosphere... it's all so intense. It feels like she should still be right here. But she's not.

And so, we are still honoring her and loving her legacy, the gifts she left us, the love she spent years pouring out to us. Nana sure knew how to save a life.

Cleaning…

… Been at it for 2 days now. Nana had A LOT of stuff. You name it, she had it. Apparently she didn’t get rid of anything either. We’re finding clothes, shoes, belts, gloves, scarves, etc. from the past several decades. We discovered outfits my Great Nana had sewn, marked by little embroidered tags reading “Specially Made by Eleanor.” We found Nana’s old wedding prints and hidden poems and treasures. We sorted through massive amounts of art and craft supplies and realized that as we already knew, Nana did it all. Knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, drawing, painting, even jewelry making… closets and boxes and random nooks around the house were just overflowing with things that represented the artist that once lived here.

It’s a sad, fun, and reminiscant kind of way to spend a few days…
